Аннотация

Within mixed-methods longitudinal study “Social Trajectories of Childhood in Contemporary Russia” life trajectories of children who receive assistance in governmental child protection institutions were analyzed. In this analysis we aim to define how children, their parents and social workers define important life events and “turning points” in children’s lives, and to access the difference between the three points of view. Research methods include in-depth interviews with 80 children aged 10 to 17 years of age and one of their parent (or other legal representative) and semi-structured interviews with social worker who coordinates work with the family, conducted in March-May 2017. Qualitative data from the survey’s first wave demonstrated a variety of important life events from children’s points of view. The first type includes events related to child’s emotional state and personal relations: falling in love, meeting a best friend, acquisition of a pet and experiencing the moments of special joy (e.g. celebrations, family trips). Another type of important life events comprises personal attainments, such as successes in sport and school life and getting aware of one’s own special capabilities. A third type of important life events includes an experience of loss, including one of a parent, or another significant adult, or a pet. While parents and social workers consider events related to family life (divorce of parents, appearance of stepfather or stepmother, birth of brother(s) or sister(s), moving to another city) as most important for children, children’s reflection of their own life trajectories were significantly different. Children’s view on their life experience has to be taken to account in case management in child protection institutions, in particularity, for reduction of risk impact and children’s empowerment.  The research was supported by the Russian Science Foundation (project № 16-18-10372).
